This animation depicts a fatal accident involving a pickup truck that approaches a parked garbage truck from the rear and impacts it, killing one of the trash collectors. The garbage truck was stopped on the roadway with its flashers on to allow the workers to climb onto the platforms. Our reconstruction of the accident demonstrated that the driver of the pickup did not slow down upon approaching the garbage truck and, due to their inattentiveness, struck the garbage truck without taking sufficient evasive action. A key aspect of this case was whether the driver of the pickup had sufficient time and distance to avoid the stopped garbage truck. The animation shows the unobstructed sightline of the pickup as it approached the trash truck.
