Motorcycle Loss of Control on Slippery Road Surface

Motorcycle Loss of Control on Slippery Road Surface

This animation depicts a fatal accident whereby a motorcycle with two riders pulling a cargo trailer lost control on a roadway due to slippery conditions caused by material on the roadway. Just prior to the accident, a rainstorm passed through the area, dampening the material on the road causing it to be especially slippery. As the motorcycle operator approached the area, he lost control of the motorcycle, slid sideways and veered off the road. The motorcycle fell over and ejected both riders, resulting in one fatality. Our engineers reconstructed the accident using scene, motorcycle and helmets inspections, photogrammetry analysis, and empirical test results from in house testing to determine a range of friction values for a range of materials on the roadway. The accident reconstruction showed that the cargo trailer did not cause the loss of control, rather the compromised roadway surface was the primary contributor to the accident.
